The euro is set for a major update: The ECB will unveil a new currency design for the first time in decades

The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced a major redesign of the euro—the first since it was introduced in 2002. The new design of the banknotes and coins is intended to reflect modern values, technological progress, and Europe’s cultural diversity. The redesign initiative was the result of years of consultations with experts, artists, and representatives of civil society from all 20 eurozone countries.As part of the preparation process, public surveys were conducted, in which more than 350,000 people participated. According to ECB data, 72% of respondents supported the idea of updating the euro’s design, emphasizing the importance of reflecting European identity and inclusivity.Particular attention is being paid to the introduction of new security features that will enhance the security of cash transactions and help combat counterfeiting. Among the innovations are improved holography, tactile features for the visually impaired, and more wear-resistant materials. The first banknotes and coins with the new design are expected to enter circulation in early 2028.According to ECB representatives, the redesign of the euro will be an important step in strengthening confidence in the single European currency and will contribute to the further integration of eurozone countries. Final designs will be unveiled in the coming months, after which a large-scale public awareness campaign targeting the general public and businesses will begin.
